Elo Ladder is a free chess app. It has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. We don't sell or share data with anyone.
What stays on your device
- Your player name, ratings, game history, training progress, trophies, board style and settings.
- This is saved only in the app's storage on your phone or in your browser. Deleting the app (or clearing your browser data) deletes it.
- Games against the bots run entirely on your device using the Stockfish chess engine. Nothing about those games is sent anywhere.
Playing a friend
- When you invite a friend, your device and theirs connect directly to each other. To set up that connection, a free public connection service (PeerJS) briefly sees a random invite code and your network address — the same thing any website you visit sees.
- Moves and your player name and rating are sent only to the player you're playing.
Online lobby (only if the owner's server is running)
- If you use the optional online lobby, the game server stores your player name, rating, game history, friends list and the network address you connected from, so the game can work and stay fair (for example, to stop cheating and abuse).
- That information stays on the server's computer and is only visible to the game's administrator.
Your age
- When you set up your player, you type in your age. It's self-reported, it's saved only on your device, and it's never sent to us or stored anywhere else.
- Quick match uses only your age group (12 and under, 13–17, or 18 and over) to pair you with players in the same group. The group is part of the temporary matching code your device uses to find an opponent. Your age is used for matchmaking only, nothing else.
No chat
- Elo Ladder has no chat of any kind. Players can't send each other messages. The only thing a player can send before a game is "Ready".
- Tap 🚩 Report in any game to report a player (for example a bad name or cheating). The report opens your email app with a private, pre-filled message to our support address. Reports are never posted publicly.
- Tap 🔇 Block to block a player: they can't join your invites or be matched with you. You can unblock them any time.
- Reports are read within 24 hours.
Children and parents
Elo Ladder is made for players of all ages and doesn't collect personal information from anyone. Ages are entered by the player and can't be verified. There is no chat, so players can't send each other messages. Player names are checked to block inappropriate words. Parents can find more on our support page.
